A shower pan test is necessary when you see water on the floor near the shower or on the other side of the wall adjacent to the shower. The shower drain has weep holes in it to allow water that soaks in through the grout to drain. To properly do the shower pan test a test ball needs to be installed into the drain lower than the weep holes.
How to Do a Shower Pan Test
When doing a shower pan test use water in a bucket to fill the shower pan area or use the shower head but avoid getting any water on the walls of the shower. The first test is for the shower pan. If it does not leak then a test for the walls may be necessary. After filling the shower pan with water look for is a discharge of water around the perimeter of your shower or adjacent wall. If you are on a pier & beam foundation, you will need to look for the discharge of water under the shower area, which may require you crawl under the house, the water may go around to an adjacent closet or room. You may need to pull back any carpet that’s next to your shower and look under it for leaks. You could see a leak right away but it may be necessary to test for up to an hour.
If you see a water discharge (or leak), then pull the plug out of the drain. The test is over! Your shower pan is positively leaking! If you do not have a drain test plug, which gives a much more accurate test, duct tape is a quick way to see if there is a largely noticeable problem.
How to Do a Shower Wall Test
If the shower drain passe the test you may wish to test the shower walls. Turn on the shower and let it run against the walls of the shower and look for leaks. If you see a leak then the walls are the problem and not the pan.
